Harwich [ hærɪtʃ ] is an English port city in the southeast of the country in the county of Essex. Due to its location on the estuary of the rivers Stour and Orwell and its importance as the only safe anchorage between the Thames and Humber the place looks back on a long history of maritime significance. Although the Royal Navy is no longer represented in its 1657 opened naval base Harwich, but still Harwich International Port is one of the main ferry ports of the United Kingdom, with connections across the North Sea to Hoek van Holland ( Rotterdam ) and to Esbjerg in Denmark. The ferry terminal was built by the Great Eastern Railway and opened in 1883 for passenger ferries, and from 1924 also drove the first train ferries, the Train Ferries No. 1, no. 2 and no. 3, from here to Zeebrugge.
