Harz Red mountain cattle

The Harz Harz Red Cattle or Red Höhenvieh as it is called correctly, is a monochrome red cattle breed from the resin and is probably one of the oldest and most primitive breeds.

History

This breed of cattle originated from the red cattle breeds southern and central Germany, and probably goes back to the red monochrome Germanic- Celtic cattle. It was developed under the conditions of the low mountain resin an independent breed of cattle.

This breed of cattle was a three -purpose cattle, that is suitable for milk production, meat production and traction.

In the 1950s, these cattle were crossed with bulls of the breed Red Danish dairy cows to increase milk production. Later in particular Angler cattle were bred. This was the Harz Red Cattle since about 1980 only a variant of the Angler cattle.

Mid-1980s it was still using existing animals of the old Harz Rotviehes ( which, however, already outcrosses to other breeds had ) to establish the new population of the Red Height cattle.

The Harz Red Cattle is threatened with extinction. In the year 1996 360 cows were still listed in the herd book.
