Hashim ibn ʿ Abd Manaf (Arabic هاشم بن عبد مناف, DMG Hasim ibn ʿ Abd Manaf; † around 510 in Gaza ) was great-grandfather of the Prophet Muhammad and ancestor of the Hashemites, which form a clan of the tribe of Quraysh.

Hashim was originally called ʿ Amr and had ʿ Abd Manaf from his father ibn Qusaiy the office of the hosting ( rifāda ) and impregnation ( siqāya ) the pilgrimage to Mecca inherited. During a famine in Mecca, he brought from his trade mission in Syria dried bread with which he crushed (Arabic: haschama ), processed to a pulp and distributed to the needy ( Tharid ). His name is the derivative - a participle active - from this verb His charity sang the Arab poet ʿ Abd Allāh ibn al - ʿ Ziba rā and called him ʿ Amr al - ʿ Ula ( the Exalted, from the high rank ).

According to tradition, Hashim said to have introduced and organized in the south and in the north the winter and summer Travel the Meccan caravans, after which the Qur'an points out in a Meccan sura:

" The fact that the Quraysh to bring together (or hold, or: put under safe-conduct ), the ( caravans ) travel winter and summer bring together, in gratitude they are to serve the Lord of this House (ie the Ka ʿ ba) "

He is supposed to have with Byzantium and Abyssinia closed trade agreements.

Hashim married Salma bint ʿ Amr and had five daughters and four sons, among them Abd al - Muttalib, Muhammad's grandfather. Hashim probably died in Gaza.
