Hasim Rahman

Hasim Rahman Sharriff ( born November 7, 1972 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA) is an American professional boxer and former heavyweight champion of the associations WBC, IBF and IBO.

Career

After only a brief amateur career in which he boxed twice against Joe Mesi ( a victory, a defeat ), he turned professional in December 1994. First notable opponents were Ross Puritty and the 40 -year-old Trevor Berbick, former world champion of the WBC Association, which he defeated each on points in 1996. Followed in 1997 point victories against Obed Sullivan and Jesse Ferguson.

His first loss as a pro, he suffered on 19 December 1998 against the hard-hitting David Tua by technical knockout in the tenth round. This fight result was controversial, as Rahman, clearly lying on points in the lead, shortly after the gong at the end of the ninth round received an action hit, not him were entitled because of the irregular hit recovery time was granted five minutes but the referee. Surprisingly knockout victory against Lennox Lewis

On April 22, 2001 Hasim Rahman created a sensation in the sport of boxing. He beat at Carnival City ( South Africa) as a clear outsider totally surprising the clear favorite world champion Lennox Lewis in the fifth round knockout and won the title so that the associations WBC and IBF. Supposedly, Lewis had not trained properly, as he participated in a brief appearance during the shooting of the film Ocean's Eleven, and not properly prepared for the altitude conditions in South Africa. He also had to rely on a rematch clause in his contract.

Rahman signed after the victory at the promoter Don King and tried to avoid a rematch with Lewis. However, he lost a corresponding lawsuit brought by Lewis trial and therefore had already seven months later defend the title again against Lewis. The fight on November 17, 2001 in Las Vegas was clearly dominated by concentrated occurring Lewis and ended in the fourth round with a knockout loss for Rahman. Both verbal duels went clashes in front of cameras ahead, to a brawl between Lewis and Rahman during a news conference.

On 1 June 2002 Rahman lost in an eliminator of the WBA Association against the former world champion Evander Holyfield. After an accidental headbutt Holyfield in round eight Rahman had such a strong swelling on the forehead, that the fight had to be stopped. He lay back in the opinion of two of the three judges and therefore lost by technical decision point. Holyfield was at that time already as "over-age " because he had passed the zenith of his career.

Then denied Rahman in March 2003 a rematch against David Tua. Despite being overweight (118 kg compared to his usual fighting weight 105 kg and 110 kg ) Rahman showed a good performance, for almost all journalists, he was the winner, but the fight was scored a draw. On 13 December 2003 a defeat followed in the fight for the interim WBA title against John Ruiz.

Rahman was now past four fights and two years without a win in the ring, so that he first punched in 2004 against a number of construction Gegenern. In November 2004, he defeated the Australian Kali Meehan by TKO in the fourth round. Meehan had acquired by a good performance and a controversial, concise point loss to Lamon Brewster respect, but not beaten opponents by rank and name. Loser fight again winning the WBC title

On 18 March 2006, he defended the WBC title with a draw against the favored James Toney. A referee had seen him with 9-3 rounds of HBO with 8-4 rounds ahead. The other two judges considered the struggle for balanced (6-6 rounds). In the meantime, the Russian Oleg Maskajew qualified as a mandatory challenger to the WBC Association for a world championship fight and occurred on 12 August 2006 against Rahman. Also this rematch could not decide for themselves how seven years before he lost the match, and thus the WBC title, by TKO Rahman.

Then he scored four victories in 2007 against average structure opponents. On 16 July 2008, he scored again to James Toney. In a relatively balanced fight Rahman suffered after a head on collision a heavily bleeding laceration above his left eye. Since Rahman assumed that the fight in the event of a crash would not be seen, he gave the referee to understand that he could not continue boxing due to the injury. Toney however, was initially declared the winner by technical knockout. A few days later, the outcome of this struggle, however, was canceled by a decision of the California State Athletic Commission, as the required number of four rounds to victory was not achieved. Rahman was thus also the fourth rematch his professional career not decide for himself, his balance sheet: two losses ( Lewis, Maskajew ), a draw ( Tua ) and a fight without rating ( Toney ).

World title fight against Wladimir Klitschko

When the Russian Alexander Povetkin injured in October 2008 in preparation for his scheduled World Championship bout on December 13, 2008 in Mannheim against the Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko, the fight date was of Klitschko retained and the fifth-placed at this time in the IBF world ranking Hasim Rahman as replacement opponent committed.
