Haskell County (Kansas)

Haskell County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sublette. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in southwest Kansas, is located in the south about 45 km from Oklahoma and has an area of 1496 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Finney County, Gray County, Meade County, Seward County, Grant County and Kearny County.

History

Haskell County was formed on 23 March 1887. It was named after Dudley Chase Haskell, an American politician and member of the House of Representatives.

Historians believe that Haskell County was the birthplace of the infamous Spanish flu. At the beginning of 1918, the doctor Loring Miner treated in Haskell County, several patients with unusual flu symptoms. Shortly thereafter, three residents were drawn into the military training camps Camp Funston west of Kansas City, whereupon there broke the disease and 38 death toll. American soldiers then brought the disease to Europe, during which at least 25 million people died.

According to the census of 2000, there were 4307 people in Haskell County. Of these, 35 people were living in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 1481 households, and 1153 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 85.1 percent white, 0.2 percent African American, 0.6 percent Native American, 0.6 percent Asian, and 11.5 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.1 percent were descended from two or more races. 23.6 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1481 households out of which 43.6 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 69.4 percent were married couples living together, 5.9 percent were single mothers and 22.1 percent were non-families. 20.1 percent of all households were single-person households and 9.2 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.88 and the average family size was 3.35 persons.

32.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 9.1 percent 18 to 24 years 27.8 percent between 25 and 44, 19.5 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 10.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 103.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 98.3 males.

The median income for a household was $ 38,634, and the median income for a family was $ 43,354. Males had a median income of $ 31,296, women $ 22,857. The per capita income was $ 17,349. 8.0 percent of families and 11.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
