The Hasso Plattner Institute for Software Systems Engineering (HPI ) is an affiliated institute of the University of Potsdam is located in Potsdam- Babelsberg. Founder and namesake of the institute is the SAP founder and chairman Hasso Plattner. The sole shareholder is the non-profit foundation under civil law Brandenburg " Hasso Plattner Foundation for Software Systems Engineering ".

History

The HPI was created through a public- private partnership in 1998. Support the non-profit Hasso Plattner Foundation for Software Systems Engineering. It has the legal form of a GmbH. The State of Brandenburg was involved in this partnership by presented the 30,000 m² for the institute buildings at Griebnitzsee in Potsdam- Babelsberg available. The construction of three multi-storey buildings including the university's Institute of computer science cost 36 million euros by Hasso Plattner took over 18 million euros. The other half has been funded with support from the European Union. At the foundation Plattner, the foundation for the current operating said Institute to provide over 20 years, 200 million euros. At the beginning of the winter semester 2010/11, the Institute had approximately 450 students. At HPI should learn to understand complex IT systems and software products to develop and master.

In the summer of 2010, around 3,800 m² of floor space bidding extension was completed. It acts as a new main building of the HPI and houses various professorships, including the HPI Research School and the Design Thinking Research Program.

In June 2012, an agreed cooperation with the Schufa in basic research around the technical processing of public data from social networks by the HPI was terminated because she was met with massive criticism inter alia of Consumer Protection Minister Ilse Aigner and the credit bureau Consumer Advisory Council. Critics feared that the deposit paid by users on Facebook, Twitter and other networks data for the development of scoring methods for evaluating the creditworthiness should be used.

Studies & academic profile

Every year will be accepted for the winter semester 80 candidates for the degree course in IT Systems Engineering. Can you complete the study as a bachelor ( after six semesters ) and Master ( after four semesters ).

Your study include students with a Bachelor project that they are working together with a partner from industry, research, or public administration. The results are presented in the context of the annual Bachelor podium to the public. Master students (120 seats in a calendar year) are supervised by a professor as a mentor. Every two weeks there will be a Soft Skills Colloquium with external speakers, for example, Hermann Scherer and Günther Jauch. At HPI semester fees at the University of Potsdam are mandatory.

Since September 2012, the HPI operates the e-learning platform open HPI, which provides free interactive courses available on the internet. The Institute would thus " initiate a new era of knowledge " one.

Currently working at the Hasso Plattner Institute 10 professors and 50 research assistants. The Institute's administration includes about 30 employees. Professors are usually appointed in collaboration with the University of Potsdam. The students are enrolled at the University of Potsdam.

HPI School of Design Thinking and HPI Research School

Following the example of the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design in Palo Alto at Stanford University, the HPI School of Design Thinking at the Hasso Plattner Institute was established. In the winter semester 2007/ 08 for the first time took 40 students from nearly 30 different fields to the Additional study. The Potsdam D-School cooperates with the Stanford d.school.

In this " inventor school" to learn an interdisciplinary approach to the development of new products students. In the part -time study, the ability is taught in two semesters to develop ideas for all areas of life. Also, the faculty consists of teams from different disciplines. Head of School Ulrich Weinberg. Lecturers - Professors, together with research assistants for three classes (consisting of three groups of four to five students) - derived from various universities from the Berlin -Brandenburg. The teaching staff is compiled every semester new.

In 2005, the interdisciplinary research seminar was opened on HPI. Early-stage researchers devote to the HPI Research School all subject areas of the HPI to the topic of service - oriented systems engineering. A PhD is supervised by two different HPI - fields. Each year scholarships are awarded for work on the HPI Research School in the winter semester 2007/ 08 15 researchers were active in the College.
