Hastings is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat ( county seat ) of Dakota County, where the largest part of the village lies. Hastings is situated at the mouth of the St. Croix River into the Mississippi River. As the administrative seat of Dakota County, most of the urban area is located in this county, a small part extends into the Washington County.

History

The area around Hastings was first settled by a military force which had been sent from Fort Snelling, in order to guard a stuck care delivery in winter 1820. A Lieutenant William G. Oliver camped in the area that became known as Oliver 's Grove later. After the Treaty of Mendota in 1851, with which the region became available for colonization by whites, the area was surveyed and registered in 1857 as a city in the land register, four years after the state of Minnesota had become part of the Union. In the same year Hastings was appointed County Seat de Dakota County. The name " Hastings " was drawn from names suggested by the four original settlers, who later became governor.

Hastings has to Stillwater 's second oldest surviving courthouse in the state of Minnesota. It was completed in 1871, the then construction costs amounted to 63,000 U.S. dollars. The County Administration moved successively from 1974 to 1989 in a new building to the town of Hastings and purchased the old building. Since 1993, the building is used as a new town hall.

The "Spiral Bridge" over the Mississippi River was built in 1895. The unusual design of the bridge had been chosen to slow down the traffic with horses and carts at the entrance to the city center. The building was a tourist attraction, but was demolished in 1951 because it did not meet the size and weight of modern vehicles and a new high-level bridge was built.

In 1930 the Army Corps of Engineers completed the construction of the first chamber of a lock in Hastings, the Lock and Dam No. 2, which is part of the system of locks on the Mississippi River between Minneapolis and St. Louis and facilitates the navigation on this river section.

The designed by Frank Lloyd Wright Fasbender Clinic is a local landmark.

Hastings and the nearby township of Nininger were the scene of an extraordinary land speculation in the mid-19th century when Ignatius Donnelly, the area designated as a possible " new Chicago ". The economic crisis of 1857, however, has this dream to an end.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 28.5 square kilometers, of which 2.3 square kilometers of water. The Mississippi River forms most of the northern boundary of the urban area, while the Vermillion River flows through the southern urban areas. The latter flows over a waterfall near a grain silo of ConAgra. Two small lakes are located within Hastings, Rebecca Lake and Lake Isabelle, both of which drain into the Mississippi River. The Northeast of the city area is called "The Bottoms " and is uninhabited and alluvial floodplains for the two rivers.

Demographic data

In the United States Census 2000 18.204 inhabitants were counted in 6642 households and 4722 families in Hastings. The population density was 694.5 inhabitants / km ². The number of housing units was 6758, which corresponds to a density of 257.8 housing / km ².

The inhabitants passed in 2000 to 97.16 % White, 0.43% African American, 0.38 % Native American, 0.64 % Asian, 0.04 % Pacific Islander, 0.36 % from other races, and 0.99 % from two or more races. 1.14% of the population reported in the Census to be Hispanic or Latino.

In 37.4 % of households were living children under the age of 18 and 56.8 % of households are married couples living together, 10.6 % of households had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9 % of households were non-families. 22.8 % of all households were made up of individuals and 8.5% had someone aged 65 years or older living alone. The average household size was 2.64 persons and the average family consisted of 3.13 persons.

Of the population 27.3 % were less than 18 years old, 8.9 % were in the age group of 18 to 24 years, 30.6 % were between 25 and 44 years old and 21.5 % between 45 and 64 years. 11.7% were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 99.8 males; each accounted for 97.7 men per 100 women in the age 18 and over.

The average income per household was $ 53,145, and the median family income was U.S. $ 61 093. The men had on average an income of 41,267 U.S. $, compared to U.S. $ 27,973 for females. The per capita income amounted to U.S. $ 22,075. About 2.1% of families and 4.9 % of the population were below the poverty line; this applied to 3.4% of those under age 18 and 9.8 % of those age 65 or over.

Traffic

The meistfrequentierteste road in Hastings is U.S. Highway 61, which is named in Hastings as Vermillion Street. Highway 61 is a four-lane thoroughfare that cuts through the east of the city in a north-south direction. If you follow the highway to the north, to get to the Mississippi River to Cottage Grove and finally to St. Paul, to the south leads to Red Wing.

The other major street in Hastings Minnesota State Route 55, which runs east - west direction. Route 55 is also four lanes and passes through the center of the city where it intersects with Highway 61. Highway 55 is mainly used by commuters in the direction of Eagan and on to Minneapolis.

Minnesota State Route 316 is a just ten miles long highway, which starts in the south of Hastings on Route 61 and leads to the southeast. Its function is a shortcut between two points of the Highway 61

Other roads that lead into the city, the Dakota County Roads 42 ( in the northwest), 46 ( to the southwest ), 47 ( to the southwest ) and 54 ( to the east).

Hastings is not operated by the MTC bus. There are, however, preliminary studies to conduct a regional train to Hastings. The trains of Amtrak travel through, but do not hold in Hastings, so that any passengers have to go either to St. Paul in the north or in the south of Red Wing to zuzusteigen.

The Mississippi River is used extensively by the shipping and northwest of Hastings is a lock. For private motor boats, there are several piers on the shore.
