Hasyim Muzadi

Achmad Hasyim Muzadi ( born August 8, 1944 in Tuban, East Java ) is an influential Indonesian politician. He was the chairman ( tanfidziyah ) of the Central Board of Nahdatul Ulama (NU ), the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia.

With the Indonesian presidential election in 2004 ( en ) Megawati Sukarnoputri and Hasyim Muzadi received 26.2 % of the vote, but lost in the second round against Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Jusuf Kalla. In 2006 he was one of the signatories of the open letter of Islamic scholars to Pope Benedict XVI. after his Regensburg speech.
