Hattem

Hattem ( listen? / I ) is a municipality of the province of Gelderland, northeast of the Veluwe with 11,774 inhabitants.

Location and economic

Hattem is located at Rijksweg 50, Arnhem - Zwolle, just 4 km south of Zwolle on the IJssel ( marina ). Hattem has some industry, among others, Materials for civil engineering. Tourism is but of greater importance.

History

The 9th century a hat home first documented testified place received its town charter in 1299. Because of its location along the river IJssel against Zwolle in Overijssel it was strategically important for the duchy of Guelders in the Middle Ages. It was for some time a member of the Hanseatic League. In the Eighty Years' War, it was in vain besieged in 1629 by Spanish troops. Also Hattem was occupied in the years 1672 to 1673 by troops of the Prince-Bishop of Münster. After 1700 the trade and thus the economic importance of the city ran back strong. In the 20th century settled in Zwolle working commuters, including many wealthy people who live south of the old town in a wooded residential neighborhood.

Attractions

Hattem has a well-preserved, picturesque town center with its many old houses from the 16th to 18th centuries. The Deichtor from the 15th century is the landmark of the town. The town hall (1619-1625) and the Gothic church of St. Andrew ( Grote of Andreaskerk ) are worth seeing.

Hattem has several small museums:

  • The bakery museum ( where children can bake bread itself )
  • The Anton Pieck Museum about the artist Anton Pieck Franciscus from Haarlem (1895-1987), whose romantic drawings adorn the " good old days " many calendars and books ( not fault fairy tales).
