Hauraki Gulf

The Hauraki Gulf is a large bay in the northwest of the North Island of New Zealand. The Gulf is located between Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula, and the Hauraki Plains.

The Gulf is part of the Pacific Ocean, with which it is connected in the north and east. The Gulf is protected from the Pacific to the north by the Great Barrier and Little Barrier Iceland Iceland and the east by the 80 km long Coromandel Peninsula. About three major waterway is the Gulf to the Pacific connected: The Colville Channel lies between the Coromandel Peninsula and Great Barrier Island, the Cradock Channel between the two islands and the Jellicoe Channel between Little Barrier Iceland and the coast of the North Auckland Peninsula. In the north of Auckland several peninsulas extending into the Gulf, in particular the Whangaparaoa Peninsula. The Kawau Island is located near the peninsula.

In the western part of the Gulf is a chain of islands that make up the entrance to Waitemata Harbour, one of the two ports of Auckland. These include, but Ponui, Waiheke and the top of Rangitoto ( a dormant volcano ), which is connected with the much older Motutapu Island Iceland by a causeway. The islands are separated from the mainland by the Tamaki Strait and the Rangitoto Channel. Other islands in the Gulf are Browns Iceland, Motuihe, Pakihi, Pakatoa, Rakino and Rotoroa near Waiheke and Rangitoto Island in the inner Gulf, Motukawao and Whanganui on the leeward side of the Coromandel Peninsula and the Channel Iceland Tiritiri Matangi and in the outer Gulf.

The Hauraki Gulf is running in the south of the Firth of Thames ( Thames - promotion ). Behind it lie the Hauraki Plains, which was formed by the rivers Waihou River and Piako River. The Hunua Ranges and the hills of the Coromandel Peninsula extending to the sides of the plane.
