Congress Hall, seat of the House of World Cultures

The House of World (HKW ) Cultures is an exhibition in Berlin for the international contemporary arts and a forum for current developments and discourses. It presents artistic productions from all over the world with particular attention to non-European cultures and societies.

Construction

The House of World Cultures was founded in 1989 in Berlin. Today it is part of the company culture events of the Federation in Berlin GmbH, which aligns well as the International Film Festival ( Berlinale ). It is under the direction of the director Bernd M. Scherer. He is an internationally manned program advisory board. The Management Board comprises as Commercial Director Charlotte Seven and Dieter Kosslick and Joachim Sartorius. Chairman of the Supervisory Board is the Minister of State ( Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media ), currently Bernd Neumann (as of 2011).

Outline and Program

The House of World Cultures has divided its events in three areas:

  • Literature, society, science
  • Visual arts, film, media
  • Music, Dance, Performing Arts

The House of World Cultures is aimed not only from their own events, but also provides spaces and infrastructure to external hosts available and cooperates with national and international universities, museums and other cultural institutions.

The House of World Cultures is located in the former Congress Hall on the banks of the Spree in Tiergarten since its inception. The congress hall is an architectural landmark of Western modernity. The building was built as an American contribution to the International Building Exhibition Interbau 1957, should the freedom of exchange of ideas embody. Consequently the construction from the beginning was associated with ideas of Western modernity and the former east-west positioning. The Labor Berlin supports projects by international artists in Berlin, including in solo exhibitions (about 2011/2012 Bethan Huws, Reading Duchamp ).

The House of World Cultures is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media and the Foreign Office.
