Haute Route

Haute Route is the name of an international high-altitude, multi-day hiking and Skidurchquerung that leads through the Valais Alps from Chamonix, France to Zermatt, Switzerland.

It was first made middle of the 19th century known as a summer route through the members of the Alpine Club. The route includes at least 12 days of hiking, or at least 7 days skiing in which the 180 kilometers from Chamonix with Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn ( Zermatt ) to be covered.

Because the route was originally hiked by an English club, they dubbed it as The High Level Route. However, this was immediately translated into French, as the path was first conquered in 1903 on skis. The Frenchman Michel Payot led the first group in the winter on the Haute Route. Only a month later followed Robert Helbling and Friedrich Reichert, who knew nothing of the previous traversal.

The official name " Chamonix -Zermatt Haute Route " mutated in part to the generic term for any multi-day alpine hut tours.
