History of breed

Havana rabbits go back to Inge 's fiery eyes, which were shown in 1899 at an exhibition in Utrecht from the farmer de Honder from Ingen at Utrecht in the class of crossbreds. This was found in a litter gray white rabbit land two of these animals, a buck and a doe. De Honder fell particularly on the chocolate brown color and the red by bright eyes, after which he named the animals. Both animals had, the present specifications for even white markings Breeders W. Jan van der Horst and Joh ( ann? ) Haisert from Utrecht bought the animals and intended to breed the brown color pure. Since the doe was not pregnant, the bucks with the does of iron-gray giant rabbits, black and blue van Beveren Lohkaninchen ( according to other sources Blue Vienna, but that seems unlikely, as this breed was developed at the same time only ) was paired. The best results brought the matings with the blue rabbit and the Lohkaninchen. The breeder called the race due to the brown coat color " beaver rabbit ". It started a speculation about the breed, for example, that caused Pit Schelling Yarteur bought 3 bucks and 2 of the does van der Horst and Haisert, and 2 pairs immediately resold at a profit to France, to which he got no further animals. He is now paired with the remaining bucks Russians rabbit, creating a smaller and lighter blow came. In France, " beaver rabbit " with Russians and silver rabbits were crossed, which also resulted in a lighter shock. In France also saw the designation as Havana ( Havana francois ), which was acquired by the Dutch growers. After Germany came both Havana rabbits of the lighter French and the Dutch heavier shock and were grown in parallel in the early years, in the course of time, then sat down by the lighter type.

It is not certain whether animals not at the same time created the type and color of the Havana rabbit at other locations in the Netherlands and France.
