Hawkins County, Tennessee
Hawkins County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Rogersville.
Geography
The County is located in northeastern Tennessee, bordered to the north Virginia and has an area of 1294 square kilometers, of which 34 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Scott County ( Virginia), Sullivan County, Greene County, Hamblen County, Grainger County and Hancock County.

History
Hawkins County was formed on November 18, 1786 from parts of Sullivan County. It was named for Benjamin Hawkins, a farmer, statesman, Indian agent from North Carolina, a member of the Continental Congress and U.S. Senator.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Hawkins County 53 563 people in 21 936 households, and 15,925 families. The population density was 42 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.24 percent White, 1.55 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.23 percent from other races groups; 0.56 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.78 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 21 936 households out of which 31.3 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.3 percent were married couples living together, 9.8 percent were single mothers and 27.4 percent were non-families. 24.4 percent of all households and 9.6 percent lived in persons aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average household size was 2.86 people.
23.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24, 30.0 percent between 25 and 44, 25.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.2 percent were older than 65, the average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 94.7 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.5 males.
The median income for a household was $ 31,300, and the median income for a family was $ 37,557. Males had a median income of $ 30,959, women $ 22,082. The per capita income was $ 16,073. 12.7 percent of families and 15.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
