Hay River, Northwest Territories

Hay River is a city on the south shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada. It is located on the eponymous river, Hay River and Yellowknife is the second largest community in the Northwest Territories. Hay River had in 2011 about 3,606 inhabitants and is located not far from Wood Buffalo National Park. The city is also the Hay River Airport.

History

The village was permanently settled in 1892, at that time were counted about 60 inhabitants. After the population in the following years further increase, a school, a hospital and a police station of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was established in the community. As part of the Canol Road construction project, was built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers during the Second World War on the neighboring Vale Iceland a start and runway.
