Hayward is a city in Alameda County in the U.S. state of California, United States, with 144 186 inhabitants ( 2010). The geographic coordinates are: 37.63 ° N, 122.10 ° West. The metropolitan area has a size of 163.3 km ².

The city was named after " William Hayward ," a worker from New England, who had settled here in 1849 during the " California Gold Rush " and opened the first shoe store.
