Haywards Heath

Haywards Heath is a town in the district of Mid Sussex, West Sussex, England. It is located 19 kilometers north of the seaside resort Brighton and 24 miles south of Gatwick Airport. Haywards Heath is the administrative seat of the district of Mid Sussex.

History

The name comes from the Old English Hayward language and means as much as the rear enclosure. Unlike other cities in the region, the history of Haywards Heath does not reach far back into the past. Until the late 19th century, the present-day city was not much more than idle land, which belonged to the nearby Hayworth Manor.

Only with the establishment of the railway line London - Brighton began the development of Haywards Heath. The opening of the station on 12 July 1841 to the nearby highway A23 Haywards Heath has quickly developed into a " commuter town ", whose inhabitants worked mainly in London, Gatwick, Crawley or Brighton.

Among other things, triggered by the connecting infrastructure growth meant that settled quickly various institutions. Thus arose beginning in 1859 a home for the mentally ill, a large cattle market, a hospital and numerous Victorian and Edwardian villas.

In the 1960s and 1970s also two companies of light industry were settled before to Haywards Heath developed in the service sector to the regional base of many UK companies.

Until 1974 Haywars Heath belonged to the county of East Sussex, but was assigned by a change in the boundaries of the county of West Sussex.

Planning

The district council of Mid Sussex is currently planning a further modernization of the city center of Haywards Heath and recently published the " Haywards Heath Master Plan". This provides for a renovation of the station as well as various streets. In addition, a new district is built with the Bolnore Village a large housing development. With this development plan also opting for a ring road fell.

Of great importance are the railway Brighton - London and nearby highways A23 and A272. The train station of Haywards Heath is one of the main stations of the route and is particularly frequently approached at rush hour.
