F2

The power station Hazelwood is powered with lignite coal power plant in the Australian state of Victoria. It is located near the town of Morwell, used to cover the base load and produces about 1 /4 of the electrical energy required in the state of Victoria. The power plant consists of eight blocks with a total output of 1675 MW. The waste heat is not used for district heating. Instead of cooling towers several scale lakes are used for cooling in the vicinity of the power plant.

The construction of the power plant was started in 1959, 1964 were the first of six blocks with a capacity of 200 MW in operation, in 1971 the last of the originally planned six blocks was completed. Even during the construction period in the late 1960s two power plant units were approved and started construction, which were completed in 1970 and 1971 due to high energy demand. Thus, the power plant since 1971 to eight blocks. Under the Prime Minister of Victoria Jeff Kennett, the power plant was privatized in 1993.

The brown coal for the operation is obtained from the nearby mining areas in the Latrobe Valley. The annual emissions of the entire power plant complex is estimated to be 17 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) and is accompanied Due to the issues of controversy. It is also required to close the power plant. It was originally planned to shut down the power station complex in 2009 because of environmental pollution. In 2005, the approval was extended until 2031.
