Hazleton is a city of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania in the United States.

Geography

Hazleton is located at 40 ° 57'32 " north latitude and 75 ° 58'28 " west longitude. At a distance of around 40 kilometers, Wilkes-Barre is located in the north. The Interstate 81 highway is tangent to the city to the west, Interstate 80 - Highway runs ten kilometers to the north. The city is located at an altitude of 515 meters, which is why it was nicknamed The Mountain City, as other cities are much lower in the area.

History

Missionaries of the Moravian Church (English: Moravian Church ) came out of Bethlehem in the area and founded in 1780 a settlement that was named because of its numerous trees Hazel Hazel Swamp. Due to the rich deposit of anthracite coal in the region, the town developed into a fast- growing city. First, immigrants came mainly from Germany and Ireland, later also from Italy, Poland and Slovakia, since the demand for fuels nationwide rose sharply and mine workers were urgently sought. The city was also known as Power City.

1857, the town was a borough and really should be called " Hazelton ". Due to a clerical error, however, was " Hazleton " securitized, and we left it at that name. In 1891, Hazleton was given the status of City. In the 1940s, Hazleton reached its peak with about 40,000 inhabitants.

After the Second World War, the anthracite production fell sharply, as other types of energy have been increasingly applied, which is why the population shrank. For new industries, however, many illegal immigrants settled mainly in Latin America. After a regulation to restrict illegal immigrants was adopted, the number went back.
