Hemoglobin subunit zeta is a protein for which the encoding known human HBZ gene.

The zeta -globin is the alpha- globin -like hemoglobin. The zeta -globin polypeptide is synthesized in the yolk sac of the early embryo, while the alpha- globin is produced throughout the life of a fetus and an adult. Zeta -globin gene is a member of the human alpha -globin gene cluster, which contains five functional genes and two pseudogenes. The order of the genes is: 5 ' - zeta - pseudo zeta - my - pseudo alpha-1 - alpha -2 - alpha -1 - theta1 - 3'.
