Heard County, Georgia

The Heard County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Franklin.

Geography

The County is located in the northwest, on the west by Alabama and has an area of 780 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers of water are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Carroll County, Coweta County and Troup County.

History

Heard County was formed on December 22, 1830 from parts of Carroll County, Coweta County and Troup County. It was named after Stephen Heard, a hero of the Revolutionary War.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Heard County 11,012 people in 4,043 households and 3,040 families. The population density was 14 people per square kilometer. 28.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.6 percent between 18 to 24, 30.7 percent between 25 and 44, 22.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.0 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.1 males.

The median income for a household was $ 33,038, and the median income for a family $ 39,306. Males had a median income of $ 31,900, women $ 22,492. The per capita income was $ 15,132. 10.5 percent of families and 13.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
