Heath Brothers

The Heath Brothers are an American jazz group led by the brothers Albert, Percy and Jimmy Heath.

Band History

Established were the Heath Brothers in 1975 by the tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath, Percy Heath on bass, drummer Albert Heath and pianist Stanley Cowell. Tony Purrone (guitar) and Jimmy Heath's son, James Mtume (percussion) came later to the group. Albert " Tootie " Heath left the band in 1978 and was briefly replaced by Akira Tana before Tootie 1982 briefly returned to the band. In the late 1990s, the formation of two albums for Concord Records was reactivated, recorded with renowned guest soloists. On the album As We Were Saying ... worked except the brothers Heath Jon Faddis, Slide Hampton, Roland Hanna, Mark Elf and James Mtume with; the following album Jazz Family also played Earl Gardner, Joe Wilder, Benny Powell, John Clark and Bob Stewart.

According to Sott Yanow at All Music Guide, the Heath Brothers originally played hard bop, but also integrated influences of R & B.

After Percy Heath 's death, the band consisted of Albert " Tootie " Heath, Jimmy Heath and various accompanying musicians. On the DVD, Brotherly Jazz: The Heath Brothers, recorded in 2004, shortly before Percy Heath's death, the brothers playing for the last time together.
