Stanning grew up as the daughter of members of the British Navy on in Scotland. She herself is a member of the Royal Artillery, which it indemnified in 2010 for training in view of the Olympic Games in 2012.
Along with Olivia Whitlam won Stanning at the 2007 U-23 World Championships. 2009 Stanning reached at the European Championships in seventh place in the eighth. At the end of 2012 Heather Stanning was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire.
