Heck's macaque

The tail macaque (Macaca hecki ) is a primate of the species of macaques within the family Cercopithecidae ( Cercopithecidae ). It is closely related to the Tonkean macaque and was formerly regarded as the subspecies.

The fur of these animals is dark brown or black, the black face is hairless, the tail is only a short stub.

Tail macaques live exclusively in the north of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Their habitat are rainforests.

About the lifestyle of the tail macaques little is known, presumably they live like most other species of macaques in groups that are composed of several males and females and their offspring. They are diurnal and are likely to feed on fruit, other parts of plants and small animals.

Due to the destruction of their habitat, the species by the IUCN is " low risk" listed in the category.
