Hedi Amara Nouira

Hedi Nouira ( born April 5, 1911 in Monastir, † 25 January 1993 in La Marsa ) was a Tunisian politician and former prime minister.

Shortly after studying law in Paris in 1934 he was one of the founders of the first cell of Habib Bourguiba Destour party. After working in the Tunisian resistance movement, the lawyer was after the Second World War quickly becoming one of the leading politicians in addition Bourguiba. So he was already 1942-1954 Secretary General of the Destour party.

Under Prime Minister Ben Ammar Taha 1954, he was Minister of Commerce on August 7. As Bourguiba was even on April 11, 1956 Prime Minister of the French Protectorate, he was appointed as Minister of Finance this. As such, President Bourguiba commissioned him to build the Central Bank. Then officiated Nouira 1958-1970 as Governor of the Central Bank. Successor as finance minister was Bahi Ladgham. Since 1969 Nouira was also Secretary General of the Neo- Destour party.

On November 2, 1970 Nouira was the successor to the incumbent only since October 19, 1969 Prime Minister Ladgham after President Bourguiba had decided to abandon socialism in favor of economic liberalization. During his tenure, he was commissioned much of the reform of the national economy and the welfare system. In 1971 he was also briefly Minister of the Interior. In 1974 he opposed the system operated by his Foreign Minister Muhammad Masmudi Union project with Libya and contributed to his overthrow in with. As prime minister, he was also designated successor of President Bourguiba, until a stroke in 1980 his political career ended.

On April 23, 1980, he was replaced by Mohamed Mzali as Prime Minister.
