Heiliger See

The Holy See is located in the city of Potsdam northeast of the city center between the Berlin suburb and the new garden. Together with the significantly lower, 1.6 km north -lying Sacrower Lake and the Grand Glienicker See it forms a chain of lakes, which lies in a glacial trough.

With its picturesque location amidst the parks and palaces of Potsdam with the Marble Palace on the west bank and Celicienhof castle close to the northern shore he enjoys as a destination and attractive residential area on the eastern shore special appreciation.

His longest north - south length is 1.33 km and the average width of 300 meters. In the area of the North Shore are (unofficial ) bathing and sunbathing areas, which are particularly popular among nudists because of their well-kept condition. At the southern tip of the lake, just behind the southern entrance to the park, located right on the shore, the two-story Gothic library.

The Holy See has over the rabbit digging in the north to connect to the Jungfernsee and thus to Havel. The hare trench is dammed to maintain the water level high. This is to protect the wooden foundation piles of the Marble Palace, which otherwise would partly be free and dry.

The lake suffers from a strong production of biomass ( leaf fall ), which is decomposed by bacteria in the share and consume the oxygen. In summer it is low in oxygen to oxygen-free in depth. In the warm season amplifies the risk of " tipping " of the lake.
