Heiligerlee is a small town with 1600 inhabitants (as of 2003) of the city Winschoten located in the east of the province of Groningen in the Netherlands, about 3 km to the west. Community structure Heiligerlee belongs to the municipality Scheemda.

In Heiligerlee began on May 23, 1568 the Battle of Heiligerlee the octogenarian war between the Republic of the United Netherlands and Spain. In this first battle fought on a muddy field 4200 Sea Beggars under the leadership of Count Louis and Adolf of Orange-Nassau, brother of William of Orange, against 3200 well-trained soldiers of the Catholic- Spanish army, commanded by Count Jean de Ligne. The Beggars were victorious, but Adolf of Orange- Nassau fell in this battle.

In memory of the battle can be found today in Heiligerlee a monument that the 300th anniversary of the battle in 1868 by King William III. was revealed.

In Heiligerlee since the 13th century was a Premonstratensian Convent ( Mons Sinaï ), founded by the mother monastery Schildwolde. Today only yet to see the reconstructed canals.
