Heinrich Altherr

Heinrich Altherr (* April 11, 1878 in Basel, † 27 April 1947, Zurich ) was a Swiss painter. He painted numerous murals in churches and public buildings.

In 1913 he came to teach at the Art Academy in Stuttgart, where he was a few years later director ( 1919-1921 ). He taught there, especially image structure and composition, and remained until 1939 when he returned to Zurich. Two years earlier, had been attributed by the ruling National Socialists of the so-called degenerate art, his style.

Some of Henry Altherrs murals can be seen in the University of Zurich and St. Paul's Church in Basel. His style is expressionistic, and the motifs are often aligned politically or socially critical.
