Karl Wilhelm Heinrich Berghaus ( May 3, 1797 in Kleve, † February 17, 1884 in Stettin) was a German surveyor and cartographer.

Work

Berghaus ' cartographic services are significant, and the number of cards is extremely large. Groundbreaking he worked through his great physical atlas ( 1st edition, Gotha 1837 to 1848, 90 sheets ), in which his collectors diligence for the first time all related to the different physical conditions of the earth united and enriched representations by his own representations. The work goes back to a suggestion by Alexander von Humboldt and should illustrate the cosmos.

In addition to this work is to mention the collection of hydrographic -physical map of the Prussian navigators (Berlin 1840 f ), a product of which he founded geographical Art School in Potsdam. Also Berghaus has delivered (1832 Stuttgart) maps to other atlases, such as the Stieler 's and Sohrschen, as well as to KFV Hoffmann's work, The earth and its inhabitants.

The movements of 1848 prompted him to issue a special Ethnographic Atlas of Germany, in particular by the Prussian state.

Also, as a writer he was a many-sided activity. He was a diligent employee of geographical journals ( eg general to Bertuch Geographic ephemeris) and published various periodicals.
