Heinrich Bodinus

Heinrich (Karl August) Bodin, also: Karl August Heinrich Bodin ( born July 29, 1814 Drewelow, † November 23, 1884 in Berlin) was a German physician and zoologist. He founded the Cologne Zoo and was director of the Zoological Gardens in Berlin.

Life

Heinrich Bodin was born the son of a farmer in domain Drewelow near Anklam. After visiting the Hunt devil 's College in Stettin, he studied from 1833 in Greifswald and Berlin medicine. After graduation he settled down first in Bergen auf Rügen as a general practitioner. In 1852 he moved to Greifswald, where he began a zoology degree. He dealt mainly with poultry. Through several publications, he was regarded as an authority in this field. He sat up very much for the dissemination of Stralsund's high flyers. According to him, the breed type Bodinussche bottlenose dolphins and the parrot Amazona festiva Bodinus Bodini has been named as subspecies of Bluebeard Amazon.

In 1859 he followed a call by Caspar Garthe to Cologne, where he successfully built the zoo. In the fall of 1869 he went to Berlin, there to reorganize the present in bad shape Zoo successfully.
