Heinrich der Glïchezäre

Henry the Glîchezære was probably Alsatian author of the 12th century, of which the Reinhart Fuchs, the first beast epic of the German language comes from. The epithet " the hypocrite " ( = cheat, hypocrite ) was transferred by mistake the fox to the poet. The patrons of the poet might have been the Earl of Dagsburg or the Zähringers.

On the status of Henry is not known, but are strikingly his profound knowledge of the law, which can be found in Reinhart Fuchs and make the work an important source of German legal history.

Henry Middle High German epic poetry Reinhart Fuchs survives in three manuscripts:

  • Kassel fragments with the Sigle S ( according to Jacob Grimm's " missive " to Karl Lachmann ), 8o Ms. poet germ et rom 1 in Kassel Murhardschen library, dated to the beginning of the 13th century, represent the oldest tradition witnesses;
  • Heidelberger Märensammlung ( Sigle P or H), Cpg 341 of the Heidelberg University Library, dates from about 1320 to 1330, which is Reinhart Fuchs entered on the column 167va - 181vb;
  • Kalocsa handwriting (K ), cod under the signature since 1949. Bodmer 72 in the Bibliotheca Bodmeriana, Cologny- Génève, is about the same age as P; Henry's work is here on the column 162v - 177v.

The significant socio-critical ( anti- Hohenstaufen ) plant probably originated after 1192 based on the Old French Roman de Renart, it was the title of the Nibelungenlied parodying, also called " Isengrîmes not". It is the only German -speaking animal epic from this period.
