Heinrich Gran

Heinrich Gran (French Henri Gran, active from 1489 to 1527 in Haguenau ) was a German printer of incunabula. In addition to John and Henry Mentelin Eggestein he considered the most important pioneer of printing in Alsace.

Little is known about Grans life, except that he introduced the printing press in Haguenau, a city which at that time was more important than today. Between 1501 and 1527 he printed 213 works mainly theological content .. Many of its print products were intended for the Hungarian book market. The Haguenau city library has a stock of about 40 incunabula from Grans workshop that are signed with the initials " HG " and occasionally have the Haguenau rose. Gran seems to have carried out in collaboration with the slightly younger Thomas Anshelm orders occasionally. Gran printed among other things, the so-called Letters of Obscure Men.
