Heinrich Hoffmann (author)

Heinrich Hoffmann ( born June 13, 1809 in Frankfurt am Main, † September 20, 1894 ) was a German psychiatrist, poet and children's author and is the author of Struwwelpeter. He also used the pseudonyms Heulalius of howling castle, rhyme Erich Kinderlieb, Peter Struwwel and Polycarpus Gastfenger.

Life

His father was an architect and urban building inspector. Hoffmann visited three years, the White women's school in his hometown, then to 1828 the Municipal Gymnasium. From 1829 to 1832 he studied medicine in Heidelberg and Halle, where he graduated in 1833 with a doctorate. Since 1830 he was a member, and later an honorary member of the Corps Alemannia.

After a stay in Paris, he returned in August 1834 to Frankfurt. 1835 appointed him the authorities of the Free City of Frankfurt to the doctor at the morgue at the cemetery in Sachsenhausen. In addition, he settled as a general practitioner and obstetrician in Sachsenhausen from 1835 to 1846 and belonged to the clinic for the poor in the Meisengasse to. This 1834 by five doctors appointed Frankfurter polyclinic care of indigent patients in Frankfurt and the surrounding villages.

In 1836 he joined the Masonic Lodge to unity, but he left after a few years, when she had received no Jewish Freemasons.

From 1844 to 1851 he taught anatomy at the Senckenberg Institute. 1848, Hoffmann was a deputy in the Frankfurt Pre-Parliament. In his household he hosted the later Baden revolutionary Friedrich Hecker. Hoffmann himself advocated a constitutional monarchy under Prussian leadership and belonged to the Erbkaiserlichen. In his satirical writings manual for Burrows and concise instructions in a few days to become a Volkmann (1848 ) and The Howlers mirror (1849 ), he strongly opposed the Republicans. In 1866 he advocated the annexation of the Free City of Frankfurt by Prussia.

From 1851 until his retirement on July 1, 1888, he was director of the Asylum for the Insane and Epileptic in Frankfurt am Main, the city's mental hospital. He is regarded as the first representative of adolescent psychiatry. At his instigation, was from 1859 to 1864 a modern new building on the Affensteiner field in the then undeveloped northern West End.

After his retirement, he wrote his memoirs published in 1926. He died after a stroke and was at Frankfurt 's main cemetery ( on the wall, No 541 ) buried. According to him, a street in Frankfurt- Niederrad is named, what is now the center of Psychiatry, University Hospital Frankfurt. Literary works

Since 1842 he has published poems and plays under various pseudonyms. He described himself as an opportunity verse maker. He received worldwide recognition through his appointed by himself with pictures children's book Der Struwwelpeter, which he wrote for Christmas 1844 for his eldest son.
