Heinrich Julius Holtzmann

Heinrich Julius Holtzmann ( born May 17, 1832 in Karlsruhe, † August 4, 1910 in Baden -Baden Lichtental ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Heinrich Holtzmann, a son of the theologian Karl Julius Holtzmann, studied from 1850 to 1854 in Heidelberg and Berlin Protestant theology. Formative teacher ware Vatke Wilhelm and Richard Rothe. He was a member of the Berlin and Heidelberg Wingolf. When promoted to licentiate in 1858, he worked first as a teacher at the seminary. In 1861 he became an associate in 1865 full professor of theology in Heidelberg. In 1874 he went into this function to Strasbourg. There he taught until his retirement in 1904 and served as rector in 1878.

Holtzmann a chief representative of the ecclesiastical direction of the German Protestant Association. In his writings, he unites a rigorous, critical view to the detection of human, Christian and religious problems. Holtzman was one of the most important representatives of the Historical- critical exegesis and mainly dealt with the New Testament. Already in his early work, The Synoptic Gospels, their origin and historical character (1863 ), he developed convincing the two- source theory.

His wife was the daughter of the historian Georg Weber. The women's rights activist and politician Adelheid Steinmann was her daughter, her sons were the historian Robert Holtzmann and the hygienist Friedrich Holtzmann.
