Heinrich Luden

Heinrich Luden ( born April 10, 1778 Loxstedt in the district of Stade, † May 23, 1847 in Jena ) was a German historian.

Biography

Luden attended the Cathedral School in Bremen and studied theology at the University of Göttingen. By the historian August Ludwig von Schlozer and later encouraged Johannes von Müller, he turned to historical studies. After a private tutor in Bremen ( 1802) he went in 1804 as tutor to the Council of State Christopher William hoof to Berlin. In 1805 he received his doctorate in Jena Christian Thomasius. He also wrote biographies of Hugo Grotius (1806 ) and Sir William Temple (1808 ).

In 1806 he was appointed as associate professor of history in Jena and in 1808 appointed honorary professor in 1810 and full professor of history. He turned to the history of Germany in order to promote the development of a German national consciousness. See this subsequently led to several publications on the subject of unity and freedom. 1814 to 1818 he was editor of "Nemesis" as well as 1816 to 1817 of "General Constitution archive ", the so-called " sidecar Nemesis ". In Leipzig he edited the "German music ".

In his much-visited by the students " almost legendary " (Gerhard Müller, Luden as parliamentarians, p 16) lectures he demanded, among other things, the sovereignty of the people. This important requirement is the spiritual influence of the French Enlightenment in particular Rousseau. It is pretty sure that he probably came up with this idea about Johann Gottlieb Fichte in contact in Jena taught philosophy until 1799 and this demand represented. Unlike some other professors (eg, the physician Dietrich Georg Kieser ( 1779-1862 ), the physician, and philosopher Lorenz Oken and the philosopher Jakob Friedrich Fries ( 1773-1843 ) ) 1817 he took no personal part in the Wartburgfest, at the same time are his ideas and writings so directly related. 1820 joined Luden as a deputy in the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Saxe -Weimar -Eisenach and remained until 1832 one of the most active members. In the wake of the Carlsbad Decrees was performed on pressure Prussia an investigation by the German federal government, which led to a ban on its policy lecture. However, a request to the Grand Duchy, which should quit Ludens teaching all remained inconclusive.

His main work, which, indeed was "History of the Germans people" under the impact of a new German national sentiment. However, Luden is to classify his work by no means the dominant in the 19th century romanticized historical representation of the German Middle Ages. Especially the Ranke school has accused him of it did not apply historical-critical method. Meanwhile, however, applies its German history as a far more neutral than the presentation of the subsequent national German historians, the German kingdom of the Ottonian, Salian and Hohenstaufen in agreement pursuit politically inflated.

Luden counts next to Lorenz Oken, Jakob Friedrich Fries, Dietrich Georg Kieser and Christian Wilhelm Schweitzer to the so-called political professors at the University of Jena around 1800. Considered as one of the ' spirit rectores ' Jena's first student fraternity whose founding statutes he mitformulierte least. To Ludens pupils was the future King Berger Professor of History and University archivist John Voigt, who made outstanding contributions to the history of Prussia.
