Life

The first music lessons were Heinrich Scheidemann by his father David Scheidemann, which organist in Woehrden and from 1604 at the Hamburg St. Catherine's Church was first bestowed. From 1611 to 1614 he took with his friend Jacob Praetorius three years' study at the time of his very important organist Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck in Amsterdam, which was financed him through the church of St. Catherine's Church. Background of this grant was the wish of all the main churches in Hamburg that their future organists were trained at the Sweelinck.

In 1629 Heinrich Scheidemann succeeded his father in the post of organist at the Church of St. Catherine in Hamburg. This office he held until his death. Scheidemann gained through his work and his influence on other organists and cantors a high reputation in the musical life of Hamburg and was regarded as an outstanding organ master. It also verified numerous organs in northern Germany. His most important student applies Johann Adam Reincken who succeeded him as organist at the Church of St. Catherine, after Scheidemann's death.

Heinrich Scheidemann is regarded as a founder of the North German organ school, which combined the style of Sweelinck with the North German Baroque tradition, and is regarded as the most important composer of organ works of the early 17th century. His compositional works mainly include preambles ( chorale preludes ), Chorales for Organ, Magnificat, spiritual songs, Kyrie and dance movements.
