Heinrich von Gagern

Heinrich Wilhelm August Freiherr von Gagern ( born August 20, 1799 in Bayreuth, † May 22, 1880 in Darmstadt ) was a German liberal politician in the age of the pre-March and the March Revolution.

Family

Henry of Gagern came from a noble family of Gagern and was one of six sons of the politician, statesman and cultural historian Hans Christoph Ernst Freiherr von Gagern. His brother Frederick of Gagern fell as General of the German Confederation in 1848 in proceedings on the Heckerzug in combat on the Scheideck. His brother Maximilian of Gagern was Nassauischer politician and diplomat. Henry of Gagern married on September 28, 1828 in Darmstadt Louise Baroness von Pretlack who died just two and a half years after the wedding. From 1839 closed second marriage to Barbara Tillmann five sons and two daughters were born.

Life

Youth and studies

Gagern attended high school Philippinum in Weilburg. After high school he went to a military academy in Munich and joined 1814 in the Nassau military service. He participated in the wars of liberation, including at the Battle of Waterloo. After his military service, he studied law at the Ruprecht -Karls- University Heidelberg and Göttingen (1817-1818), at the University of Jena (1818-1819) and Geneva (1819 ). During his studies, he was co-founder in 1815 of the fraternity Teutonia Heidelberg and 1817 leading member of the first student fraternity in Jena. In 1818 he co-founded the fraternity in Leipzig.

Political career

After studying Gagern 1821 appeared as a Hofgerichtsakzessorist in the civil service of Hesse -Darmstadt. In 1824 he was Regierungsassessor, 1829 State Council. In 1832 he was elected to the Second Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse. Because of his political views, he was expelled a year later from the civil service, went to live as a landowner in Auerbach and worked as a political journalist. From 1846 onwards counted Gagern to liberal Hall Garden District to Johann Adam von Itzstein. In 1847 he was next to Karl Mathy and Georg Gottfried Gervinus a founder and editor of the German newspaper. In the same year he took part in the Heppenheim Assembly of the moderate liberals.

In 1848 he was a member of the Siebzehnerausschuss and the Pre-Parliament and became a deputy of the Frankfurt National Assembly for the electoral district of forcing mountain. He was a member of the Casino Group. On 19 May 1848 he was elected with 305 of 397 votes as the first president of the Frankfurt National Assembly. Since March 5, 1848 he was Minister President of Hesse- Darmstadt. From this position he resigned with the first re-election as President of the National Assembly on 31 May 1848.

Gagern designed much the policy of the National Assembly. He was a member of the Constitutional Committee and thus instrumental in advising the fundamental rights. On 24 June 1848 he suggested that the National Assembly should determine with a " bold stroke " and in its own right, a regent. Because of this resolute appearance Gagern the law was passed four days later on the introduction of a provisional central government for Germany and elected the following day Archduke John as regent. On December 17, 1848 Gagern was appointed Reich Minister after the resignation of the government and at the same time Schmerling officiated so as Reich senses and Foreign Minister. Gagern advocated a constitutional monarchy under the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. At the same time he called for a narrower waistband under Prussian leadership, and another with the inclusion of Austria. On March 27, 1849 voted under his leadership, the fractions Casino and West Hall with 267 against 263 votes for the Erbkaisertum and chose the following day with 290 to 248 votes the Prussian king hereditary kingdom head. On April 3, Gagern belonged to the imperial deputation that Frederick William IV offered the crown, which rejected this. From the Office of the Minister President, he resigned on 10 May 1849, when it was foreseeable that the St. Paul's Church Parliament under monarchical pressure showed signs of disintegration and radicalized in the sequence. On 24 May 1849 he also resigned his seat. After the dissolution of the National Assembly, he supported the Prussian Union policy in Gotha Nachparlament and in the Erfurt Union Parliament.

In 1850 he participated as a major at the Schleswig-Holstein war part. 1862 was Gagern Messenger of Hesse - Darmstadt in Vienna, from 1866 to 1872 he was again the Hesse-Darmstadt city of Second Chamber.

After he had been Catholic educate his children, Henry resigned from Gagern in July 1870 to Catholicism. His uncle Ernst von Gagern was also a convert and a Catholic priest.

Honors

Henry of Gagern was named as the most influential and one of the most popular politician Paul Church on 29 March 1849 an honorary citizen of Berlin on 12 April 1849 an honorary citizen of Brunswick. Even today carry several roads and schools in Germany his name, such as the Heinrich -von- Gagern High School in Frankfurt am Main.
