Heinrich von Rustige

Life and work

Rustige was a student of Wilhelm von Schadow in Dusseldorf and director of the Royal State Gallery in Stuttgart. From 1845 he was professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. 1865-1866 could be Rustige by Christian Friedrich von Leins in Stuttgart, a house in the Neckarstraße build 53, 1951 canceled.

Rustige moved into 1828, the Dusseldorf Art Academy, 1836, moved to Frankfurt and from there undertook study trips to Vienna and Hungary, later to Dresden, Berlin, France and England. In 1845 he became a professor at the art school in Stuttgart and inspector of the Württemberg State Gallery. In 1887 he gave up his teaching. Rustige has historical and genre pictures, landscapes and portraits painted and diligent study and lively sense of characteristics shown therein a skill in arrangement and execution.

From his paintings are the prayer in a thunderstorm ( loss in World War II ) and the flood ( Berlin National Gallery ), the Duke of Alva in the castle of Rudolstadt ( Gallery at Stuttgart), transfer of the body of Emperor Otto III. to Germany and Frederick II and his court in Palermo and highlight " Two Italians " ( Municipal Museum Werl ). In Werl museum also houses the largest collection of the artist issued.

Rustige has also become known as a poet. A band of lyrical poems (1845 ) was followed by the historical dramas " Filippo Lippi " ( 1851), " Attila " (1853 ), "Konrad Widerhold " (1856 ), "Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian " (1860 ) and " Eberhard the Bearded " ( 1863) as well as the sometimes humorous " rhymes and dreams in a dark cell " (Stuttgart 1876).

Honors, ennobling, Memberships

Henry of Rustige in 1867 was awarded an honorary Knight's Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown, which was connected with the personal title of nobility.

For his contributions to art and science, he was appointed in 1890 as an honorary citizen of the city of Werl.

Rustige was in 1850 a member of the Stuttgart artist Society The Radiant mine since its founding.
