Heinrich Wolfgang Ludwig Dohrn

Heinrich Wolfgang Ludwig Dohrn ( born April 16, 1838 in Braunschweig, † October 1, 1913 in Florence) was a German entrepreneur, zoologist and politician. He was a member of the German Reichstag and member of the Prussian House of Deputies and City Council of Stettin.

Life

Heinrich Dohrn came from a wealthy Szczecin entrepreneur and merchant family. His eponymous grandfather Heinrich Dohrn was co-founder of the Pomeranian provincial sugar mill, his father Carl August Dohrn was next to his professional activities, an important entomologist. Heinrich Dohrn attended from 1856 to 1861, the universities of Bonn, Zurich and Berlin to study the natural sciences and a doctorate in 1861 for Dr. phil. In 1856 he became a member of the Bonn fraternity Franconia. He undertook extensive travel, including 1864-1866 greater in West Africa, where he operated zoological research, but fell ill on the Prince Island, of which he his life should not completely recover.

Since 1866 he promoted public and commercial interests in Szczecin. He was co-founder in 1870 of the shipping company Baltic Lloyd, who set up a direct shipping line to New York, but had to cease their activities in 1876. In 1872 he founded the Association for the promotion of overseas trade relations. From 1879 to 1913 he worked in the Supervisory Board, which was founded by his grandfather Pomeranian Provincial sugar mill. He was also one of the initiators of the Municipal Museum founded in 1913 Stettin, where he put a collection of antiquities.

From 1869 to 1878, from 1890 until his death he worked as an unpaid City Council in Szczecin, between 1878 to 1890 as a city councilor. Since 1904 he was an honorary citizen of Szczecin. Member of the Prussian House of Representatives, he was from 1874 to 1879 for Randow Greifenhagen. Member of the Reichstag, he was from 1874 to 1878 and 1881 to 1884 respectively for the constituency of Usedom - Wollin - Ueckermuende, and from 1890 to 1893 for the electoral district of Schwerin - Wittenberg and 1907-1912 for Szczecin City. He moved here from the National Liberal Party, the Liberal Union, the German Liberal Party and ultimately the Liberals Association.

Heinrich Dohrn died 1913 in Florence on a trip to his nephew Reinhard Dohrn, who was active in Naples.
