Heinz Mack

Otto Heinz Mack ( born March 8, 1931 in Lollar, Hesse ) is a German artist and co-founder of the internationally influential ZERO group. Mack became known for his experimental light relief as well as its light installations in the desert, which are among the earliest examples of Land Art. He is a multiple documenta participant and represented Germany at the 1970 Venice Biennale.

Life and work

Heinz Mack was born in 1931 in Hesse Lollar. From 1950 he studied at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf, from 1953 Philosophy at the University of Cologne. He finished his training with the state exam in art education and philosophy in 1956.

Together with Otto Piene he moved into a studio in 1956 Gladbach Road 69 in Dusseldorf. At that time his employment with the problems of vibration and the light begins. His so-called dynamic structures are images that are limited to the scale of black and white values ​​and consist of assembled vertically or horizontally straight. Later Lichtreliefs follow from pressed metal sheets, Plexiglas and aluminum.

Heinz Mack lost in September 1984 in Moenchengladbach Grade II listed half-timbered house by fire, with many works of art were destroyed. Today the artist lives in Mönchengladbach and Ibiza.
