Heinz Staab

Heinz August Staab ( born March 26, 1926 in Darmstadt, † July 29, 2012 in Berlin) was a German chemist. He was 1984-1990 President of the Max Planck Society.

Life

After studying chemistry at the universities of Marburg and Tübingen as well as medicine in Tübingen followed after graduation as Dipl.- chemist Dr. rer. nat. (1953 ) and MD ( 1960). From 1953 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Chemistry in Heidelberg. In 1962 he was appointed as associate professor of organic chemistry at the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg. In 1963 he was appointed full professor. In 1974 he became director of the Organic Chemistry Department at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg.

From 1984 to 1990 he was President of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science.

Work

Staab worked in the field of heterocyclic chemistry. He dealt with the kinetic and spectroscopic studies of this group of compounds and their use in preparative organic chemistry. Further research focused on the physical and synthetic organic chemistry and bioorganic chemistry, in particular, there were studies of the molecular structure and its relationship to physical, chemical and biological properties.

Staab was a regular member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences; 1994 to 1996 he served as president of the Academy. He was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the Academia Europaea. Furthermore, he was a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Sciences.

He was an honorary member of the Indian Academy of Sciences; of the Academia Sinica, he was awarded an honorary professor. In 1979 he received the Adolf von Baeyer Medal of the German Chemical Society. 1991 awarded him Minister President Erwin Teufel, the Medal of Merit of the State of Baden -Wuerttemberg. He was with the Harnack Medal, the highest award for special services to the Max Planck Society, awarded in 1996. He became an honorary member of the German Chemical Society ( German Chemical Society ), which he was president from 1984 to 1985 in 1999.
