Helen Donath

Helen Donath, born in Erwin, (* July 10, 1940 in Corpus Christi, Texas) is an American soprano.

Helen Donath went to Corpus Christi to school and began also to study. Later she continued her studies in New York, where she already had her first concert appearance at the age of 18 years. In 1962, she received at the Cologne Opera her first performance in Europe. She made her debut as a second Rheintochter Wellgunde in Richard Wagner's Das Rheingold. From 1963 to 1968 she sang at the Opera House Hannover. Here she met her future husband, the pianist and conductor at the opera house Klaus Donath.

In 1966 she made ​​a guest contract with the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, which was her career, extremely beneficial. So she sang 1967 and 1968 as Pamina in The Magic Flute at the Salzburg Festival. So she managed finally, the international breakthrough. Opera and concert she has appeared since then in all the world, such as La Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House in London, at the Staatsoper Berlin, Vienna, Munich, Dresden and Hamburg, Paris, Tokyo and over again in their American home. In 1991, she debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Marcellina in Fidelio and as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro. Particular highlights were the role of the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier in Detroit, under the leadership of her husband Klaus Donath and in the direction of her son Alexander Donath, and Despina in Cosi fan tutte at the Salzburg Festival in 2004 to 2006. At the Cologne Opera she sang 2011 as ' Mrs. Grose ' in The Turn of the Screw.

Helen Donath has won several awards for her achievements, including as Bavarian chamber singer, as an honorary doctorate from the University of Miami and in 1990 with the Lower Price. In 2005 she received the Order of Merit 1st class of the Order of Merit of Lower Saxony.
