Helena Patursson

Susanna Helena Patursson ( born August 27, 1864 in Kirkjubøur, Faroe Islands, † December 15, 1916 ibid ) was a Faroese writer and the first women's rights activist in the country.

Life

Susanna Helena was like their famous brothers Jóannes and Sverre a child of Kong Bonde ( king's pawn ) Poul Peder Pedersen and his wife Ellen Cathrine Djonesen. She grew up on the largest and most historic estate of the Faroe Islands in Kirkjubøur and received together with their brothers private lessons. For further she went to Copenhagen, where she learned piano and manual labor. By 1904 she was working there then as a paralegal until she returned at the age of 40 years on the Faroe Islands.

Like her brothers, she was active in the National Revival movement since 1888, but it was directed at women. Already in 1889 she wrote the first Faroese play Veðurføst. It's about the political participation of women and their organization of the tutoring of the Faroese language. There are only fragments obtained this piece. Susanna Helena wrote besides some poems and short stories in the leading newspapers of the Faroese nationalists Føringatíðindi and Fuglaframi. In 1896 she was able to assert that the Färingerverein in Copenhagen receives women.

After their return to the Faroe Susanna Helena Patursson founded the first Faroese women's magazine Oyggjarnar ( " The Islands "), which was published from 1905-08 under its auspices. In those years it was the only magazine to stay in Faroese, the erschiein regularly. Your content revolved around the teaching of written language by the mere existence of the journal, to employment opportunities and training courses for women, and not least to the Faroese Faroese cuisine and handmade. The recipe book was then published in 1909 as a cookbook Matreglur Fyri hvørt hús ( " dishes for each house "). In 1912 the book Fríðka to búgvið ( " Better Living ").

Although the newspaper was met with great interest, it remained tragically supporting their politically active brothers failed. Your biographer Malan Marnersdóttir attributed this to the fact that the female and writing insecure voice was not heard. In 1952 was created by Sigrid av Skarði Joensen with the Women's Association Kvinnufelagið an organization of Färingerinnen which appeals to the feminist pioneer Susanna Helena Patursson.

On 19 May 2008 Helena Patursson was honored with a postage stamp.
