Helena Sophia Isberg

Helena Sophia Isberg (* 1819 in northern Småland, † February 28, 1875 in Motala ) was a Swedish Holzschnitzerin.

Sophia Isberg moved in 1840 with her family in a small cottage in the heart of Motala, where she lived with her brother until death. She was taught by her father, who taught her turning and carving. Your inspiration she found in the area and possibly in magazines. Isberg worked mainly birch wood and ivory in exceptional cases.

Several works have been exhibited in 1847 in Stockholm and she was invited to move to the capital. The sculptor Carl Gustaf Qvarnström offered her a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Art and Queen Josephine wanted to support them with monthly 200 Reichstalern, but Sophia remained in Motala. Other acclaimed exhibitions had 1862 in London, in 1865 in Paris and 1875 in Vienna.

Sophie Isbergs grave is on the big cemetery in Motala. The largest collection of her works can be seen in the local museum of Motala, which is located in Charlotte Borg lock.
