Helge Payer

Helge Payer ( born August 9, 1979 in Wels, Upper Austria ) is an Austrian football player. The goalkeeper is currently without a club.

Career

Payer began his career at age 6 with Eintracht Wels. Already in the first practice he turned, like his father, between the posts. In 1991 he moved to Vienna in the offspring of SK Rapid. There he played in various youth teams from U11 to U18 and in 1997 received his first professional contract. Payer came first at the Rapid amateurs to use, with whom he was in 1998 Cup winner Vienna's city league.

In the 2000/2001 season he was loaned to ASK Kottingbrunn. He won with the team the championship title in the Regional League East and was convened at the end of the season in the Austrian U21 national team. After this successful season, he was brought back from Rapid to replace the Czech goalkeeper Ladislav Maier long term. But a violation of the Czechs forced the just arrived in Vienna coach Lothar Matthäus Payer to throw into cold water. The first games in the Bundesliga, he completed relatively error free and the then 22 -year-old was attributed by all sides talent. His first European Cup games were less happy. In the first leg he St. Germain ( even then with Ronaldinho ) underwent against Paris in the Parc des Princes stadium two crucial mistakes ( Result 4:0 ) and then he was for the media is the main culprit for the resignation of Rapid players in the UEFA Cup ( second leg 2:2 ). Thereafter, however, he showed consistently good performance again and remained until the end of the season in goal from Rapid.

In the next season (2002/ 03) came with Hickersberger a new coach, the first of the fit-again Ladi Maier gave confidence. But in the winter break, Payer was able to secure the position in the goal and stood in the entire second half in goal. Due to his good performances he was nominated by coach Hans Krankl for the match against Belarus in June 2003 for the first time. At the end of the season he was voted by the fans for Rapid players of the year. 2003/ 04 he was from the beginning a regular player and creates the only reason why not a full season because he was injured in the 27th round, and thus failed the rest of the season.

2004/ 05 started Payer again as number one. Due to an injury of unknown duration Rapid had but shortly before the transfer deadline to find a replacement and therefore committed Jurgen Macho. After Payer had recovered from his injury Hickersberger had the problem of having three strong goalkeeper, because Maier reached its umpteenth spring. From the following goalkeeper castling Payer was the winner. Then Macho was sold during the winter break to Kaiserslautern. After the winter Payer was again undisputed number one and an important component for the championship title of Rapid. At the end, he was elected for the second time after 2002 /03 on the Rapid players of the year. In addition, he was still elected by the courier and the Bundesliga goalkeeper of the season and was the team of the year the newspapers Kurier and sports week.

His services were rewarded by Rapid in October 2005 with the extension of his contract until 2010. He was the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper this season of rapid and was used in 32 of 36 games. After the departure of Steffen Hofmann, he was elected as the new captain. The 2006/07 season was a difficult phase with the low 18 games, as they fell back to the bottom of the table until the winter break not only for rapid, but also for Helge Payer. Payer was for many observers not the appropriate captain and some mistake, especially a momentous in stoppage time against Traun, who had the defeat Rapids and the sacking of coach Zellhofer result, were attributed to him. However, the season ended for rapid under new coach Pacult with fourth place yet conciliatory and Helge Payer has been improved again. Only in the 2007/2008 season he could again connect to its services from the championship season and its strengths, the game on the line and his reflexes in direct combat, show. In contrast, the Austrian national team, he lost his place and was only set as number three behind Siena Legionnaire Alexander Manninger and his former team-mate Jurgen Macho one year before the European Championships.

In the 2007 /08 season Payer could parry four of five penalty kicks. Rapid thus won the Bundesliga championship and Helge Payer his second championship title.

Due to a retinal vein occlusion in the intestinal region had Payer end of May 2008 to take a break and could not therefore play in the European Championship. The SK Rapid committed then Georg Koch as a substitute. On 29 October 2008 Helge Payer that his comeback in the spring of 2009 from a health standpoint announced nothing stands in the way. On February 22, 2009 Payer celebrated the away match against Red Bull Salzburg in his comeback goal from Rapid Vienna. The remaining games of the season 2008/2009 he stood in the gate.

In April 2012, Payer announced that he at SK Rapid Vienna a new challenge abroad seeking after more than two decades and was withdrawing from the training operation immediately. On August 24, 2012, he hired the Greek second division club AEL Kalloni on the island of Lesbos.
