Heliodorus (minister)

Heliodorus was Chancellor of Seleukidenkönigs Seleucus IV.

Life

Heliodorus ' father was Aeschylus from Antioch on the Orontes; Heliodorus grew up together with Seleucus IV. This had to make tribute payments to Rome, but just could not afford, which is why he sent Heliodorus to Jerusalem, there to seize the treasures contained in the Jewish temple.

Heliodorus murdered Seleucus IV in 175 BC and later became guardian of his five year old son Antiochus. His uncle, the brother of Seleucus IV, Antiochus, Heliodorus, however, sales in the same year with the help of the kings of Pergamon, Eumenes II and Attalus II.

Heliodorus in the Bible

Heliodorus is also mentioned in 2 Macc 3.4 to 40 EU. The book reported that he had tried IV to seize the treasury in Jerusalem on behalf of Seleucus. As the Jewish priests refused, he tried to penetrate with a troop in the temple. In Jerusalem that led to a great dismay of residents who asked God for help. The widows and orphans had also brought their possessions into the temple and handed over to the High Priest in trust. As Heliodor storm the temple, the priest Onias begins to pray at the altar. Heliodorus 've seen then a " huge phenomenon ", and was attacked by three horsemen, and thereby come almost to death. It was only through the intercession of the high priest Onias III. recovered and had then drained from his purpose.
