Hellas (disambiguation)

Hellas (Greek Ἕλλάς ) is the proper name of Greece and was originally the name of a town near Pharsalus in südthessalischen landscape Phthiotis that of Hellen ( Ἕλλην ) was founded to. Hellen is also considered the ancestor of the tribe of the Hellenes who lived in this region. In Homer, Hellas was the name of the district Phthia. (see Greeks: names for the Greeks )

In literary texts, the term is sometimes used instead of the word in the language. As a reference to the Greek culture, this term is the inspiration for various organizations or products. Quite often we find the term as the name of sports clubs, both historical as well as those of the Greek diaspora.
