Predecessor institution NSSG

By order of the Parliament , Or shortly Greek) was established in 1986 in the field of statistics, the General Secretariat for the statistical service of Greece bundled. It was under the Economy and Finance. In effect, this meant that governments could influence the Administration.

In November 2004, Eurostat published a comprehensive report on the Greek government revised calculation of the budget deficit and the national debt. The report showed that in the years prior to 2004 reported by the Greek authorities informed the Commission deficit figures were not calculated according to the European rules. So military expenditures were allocated to the delivery and not the year of order. The changes concerned not less than eleven different points. After recalculating the Greek deficit figures for the years 1997 to 2000 were above the Maastricht convergence criterion of 3 percent of GDP. Greece would have the European Monetary Union on the basis of the correct data may not join.

Having to Giorgos Papandreou revealed the hitherto veiled level of budget deficit after the change of government in October 2009, the new Finance Minister Giorgos Papakonstantinou had set up a commission that investigated the behavior of previous years and found that the previous government under Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis her not agreeable numbers just dropped under the table, so as not to burden the statistics it. From an analysis of Eurostat, the image of a veritable counterfeit workshop revealed. The EU Commission ruled in a report, the Office for National Statistics NSSG provides no reliable data because it was the policy at the leading-strings. While this weakness is not corrected, the reliability of the data remains questionable.
