Hellevoetsluis

( Listen? / I ) hellevoetsluis is a municipality on Voorne -Putten in the Dutch province of South Holland.

History

In order to strengthen the military and commercial port, the fortification of Hellevoetsluis was built for the Admiralty of Rotterdam at the beginning of the 17th century. The small town was at that time the largest naval port of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands and retained an important position as a port city until the 19th century.
