Hellinikon Olympic Complex

The Elliniko Olympic Complex or Helliniko Olympic Complex is a sport center, which was built for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. It is 12 km south of the city center in the suburb of Elliniko 36.2 km from the Olympic Village.

History

Following closure of the airport Athens - Ellinikon the site should be turned into a park. At the beginning of this planning almost all buildings should be demolished, an architectural competition was the turning point: in 1963 by the Finnish architect Eero Saarinen designed Terminal East should not be cut off from the plant and part of the runway should remain as a promenade, including the equipment. Indoor Arena and Fencing Hall

In the Indoor Arena the preliminaries of the basketball tournament and the finals of the handball tournament took place. The basketball ground capacity is 15,000. handball 13,500. During the Olympics, the capacity was limited to 10,700 or 10,300. The Fencing Hall is a building adjacent to the Indoor Arena, where the competitions were held in fencing. The construction works ended on 31 May 2004, the official opening took place on 30 July 2004; the construction costs amounted to 80 million euros. After the Olympics, used different basketball clubs, including AEK Athens and Panionios Athens, the Indoor Arena. Olympic Baseball Centre

The baseball center consists of two stages. The larger holds 8,700 spectators, the smaller 4,000 spectators. During the Olympics, we limited the capacity to 6,700 or 3,300 spectators. Olympic Softball Stadium

The softball center consists of a stadium that holds 4,800 spectators, although were occupied during the Olympic Games more than 3,400. Next door there are two training fields. The construction works ended on 29 February 2004, the official opening took place on 30 July 2004; the construction costs amounted to EUR 8 million.

Olympic Canoe / Kayak Slalom Centre

The total area of ​​the Centre for the canoe slalom competitions is 288,000 m². It includes the whitewater race course, a training course and a 27,000 square meter artificial lake for warm-up. It offers 7,600 spectators, but during the Olympic Games, the capacity was limited to 6,700. The construction works ended on 31 March 2004, the inauguration took place on the occasion of Whitewater World Cup from 22 to 25 April 2004; the construction costs amounted to 10 million euros.

Olympic Hockey Centre

The hockey center consists of two stages. The larger holds 7,300 spectators, the smaller 2,100 spectators. During the Olympics, the spectator capacity was limited to 5,200 or 1,200. Besides the two stages, there is a training ground. The construction works ended on 29 February 2004, the official opening took place on 11 August 2004; the construction costs amounted to 11 million euros.

During the Summer Paralympic Games in 2004, the stadium for the football competitions was used.

Since then, the hockey stadium remained unused and expire. Hockey was not played there since 2004.
